We at the West Irvine Church of Christ would
like to thank you for visiting our site and
would like to invite you to come be with us as
we worship our Heavenly Father. We are a
local Body of Christians located in Irvine, Ky,
who love the Lord and seek Bible Authority for
all that we do. If you have never submitted
your life to Christ, the Gospel plan of salvation
is very simple: The Bible teaches that we must
believe, Hebrews 11:6, without faith it is
impossible to please him, understanding that
faith is essential we find in Romans 10:17 that
our faith comes only from hearing the Word of
God. The Word of God teaches that we must
repent. Christ reveals to us in Luke 13:3,
unless we make this change we will perish.
We also must be willing to Confess Jesus
Christ as the Son of God Romans 10:10 , and be
buried with Him in Baptism Mark 16:16 ,
Romans 6:3-4.If we can assist you in obeying
or if you would like further study please don’t
hesitate to contact us.

BEING A GODLY EXAMPLE
DURING DIFFICULT TIMES
Acts 16:23-24 (KJV)verse 23 of Acts 16  when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them
safely: 24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

Prison in the 1st century was not what we may consider prison today. As terrifying as the thought of a modern day prison may be and rightfully so
it is of no comparison to the horrific conditions that prison was in the 1st century it was prison. Modern day prisons provide food for the prisoner
and they provide  medicine if needed  they provide a sleeping arrangement, not the best of any but none the less provisions are made, the
prisons the Apostle Paul occupied in these times were in no way this luxurious. Prison Conditions:  One prison unearthed in the city of Tiberius
found that    each cell measures 1.8 by 2.7 meters, and is 2.07 meters high. Its walls were extremely thick, with the outer wall (1.1 meters thick)
containing two narrow openings onto the city square. The slits presumably provided ventilation, and one also served as a food portal. Narrow
benches run along the length of the cells uncovered.  Said of another ancient Roman prison its appearance is disgusting and vile by reason of
filth, the darkness and stench. Most prisoners wore chains; their feet might be shackled, their hands manacled or even attached to their neck by
another chain, and their movements further restricted by a chain fastened to a post. Some prisoners were also kept in wooden stocks, devices to
restrain the feet, hands, or even the neck of an individual .Prisons often were very dark the inner area of the prison mentioned in Acts 16:24 was
probably without windows. Prisons often had poor air circulation, a lack of hygienic facilities, and food of poor quality.
Paul and Silas badly beaten to where they could barely stand no doubt bloody and bruised are thrown into a prison similar to one as we have just
described. What is there reaction?  After being severely beaten and thrown into a vile dark prison bound in stocks, even in this instance they
didn't give people any opportunity to find fault with how they serve. Instead, there lives demonstrated that they were God's servants and what a
powerful message it was that was spoken Acts 16:25 (KJV) at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners
heard them.  They sang and they prayed.  It’s hard to even try to begin to describe what this says to us.  When we think of the physical condition
they were in and condition of the prison they were in how could it be possible that this is their reaction, except they had a deep understanding of
what it meant to look at this life through the eyes of spirituality.
Notice the result of the decision Acts 16:26-34 (KJV) 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were
shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his
sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28
but Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling,
and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord
Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 32 And they spoke unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. Their decision to conduct
themselves in a manner where the Gospel would not be hindered   not only did not hinder it but it preached a powerful sermon, it resulted in a
man desiring to know what it was he must do to obtain salvation, it resulted in that man being told what he must do to obtain that salvation from
the Word of God, and ultimately resulted in that man and most likely many of his household being baptized into Jesus Christ. We don’t have to
speculate that this had a positive effect we know by the salvation obtain by this jailer when he went into the watery grave of baptism.  Despite how
dire the circumstances in our life may be we must remember our action can and do have a profound effect on the Gospel. Whether positive or
negative is our decision.

 A GREAT DOOR
As Paul discusses his travel itinerary at the end of his 1st epistle to his Corinthian brethren, he says something interesting in Verses
8 and 9 of the 16th Chapter “I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. 9 for a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are
many adversaries.” The phrase a great door and effectual is opened unto me, is the phrase I would like to focus on for just a few
moments. Many times we neglect the Work of the Lord , because we feel as though no one will respond, largely due to the fact that
we put the emphasizes on ourselves rather than the foresight of God and His Word. We can read of the tarrying the Apostle Paul
speaks of in Ephesus in Acts the 19th Chapter and as we read the 1st 20 verses of this chapter we can notice some of the effective
results accomplished from this opened door in Ephesus. Verse 5 12 disciples were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, verse 6
12 disciples receive the Holy Ghost, prophesy, and speak in tongues, verse 8 things concerning the Kingdom of God are taught,
verse 10 all that dwelt in Asia  both Jew and Greek heard God’s Word, verse 12 Diseases were healed and evil spirits were driven
out, verse 17 The name of the Lord was magnified, verse 18 Many believed and confessed, showing there deeds, verse 19 Magic
books worth 50,000 pieces of silver are burnt, and verse 20 The Word of God grew mightily and prevailed. As Paul makes mention
of this door he also speaks of many adversaries that resided in the same area. The greatest adversary in this city being the worship
of the great goddess Diana.  Many followed the belief of this goddess , but had Paul chose not to  walk through the  door which the
Lord had opened in Ephesus, how many  of those who obeyed the Gospel would have rather been swayed by the vain worship of this
idolatrous goddess. As we make some personal application the Lord has opened a great and effectual door in our lives and there
are many adversaries, if we chose not to walk through that door, how many would be Christians will there be that is swayed by the
adversary.
